It is always a thrill when the GPS woman’s voice asks “would you prefer to travel unpaved roads to reach your destination”? You bet!
Down south unpaved roads are actually common, much like up in the very northern areas of Wisconsin and Minnesota. Paved asphalt is only the gold standard in the suburban and urban American locals.
Unpaved roads offer many practical and cost effective benefits, as well as the pervious advantage to groundwater recharge. But it is the sense of adventure one feels as you follow the path up and down the “lay of the terrain” feeling more grounded and in touch with the earth.
Once we remove, or decide to not replace all the handrails the fossil-fuel empire has built in the last 100 years, we will live more within current means and become more in line with real needs.
